The panchanga is anchored to local sunrise, so the vedic day here runs from 6:28 am to the next sunrise — not from midnight. Values shown are those prevailing at sunrise, with the moment each one changes.

What the five limbs are

Panchanga means "five limbs" — the five measurements that define a vedic day. Tithi is the lunar day, one of thirty, set by how far the Moon has pulled ahead of the Sun. Vaara is the weekday and its ruling graha. Nakshatra is which of the twenty-seven lunar mansions the Moon occupies. Yoga and karana are derived from the same Sun–Moon relationship. Each is defined by the sky's actual geometry, which is why they shift at odd clock times rather than at midnight.

Definitions for every term here are in the Jyotish glossary, and the panchanga chapter works through how each limb is derived.

Sunrise differs by location, and the panchanga is anchored to it — so these genuinely differ, especially near a transition.
